Copycat Recipes: Outback Steakhouse Bloomin Onion Recipe


Recipe

  • 4 Vidalia or Texas Sweet Onions

Batter:

  • 1/3 Cup Cornstarch
  • 1 1/2 Cup Flour
  • 2 tsp. Minced Garlic
  • 2 tsp. Paprika
  • 1 tsp. Salt
  • 1 tsp. Pepper
  • 24 oz Beer

Seasoned Flour

  • 2 Cups Flour
  • 4 tsp. Paprika
  • 2 tsp. Garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp. Pepper
  • 1/4 tsp. Cayenne pepper

Directions

  1. Mix cornstarch, flour, and seasonings until well blended.
  2. Add beer, mix well.
  3. Cut about 3/4″ off top of onion and peel. Cut into onion 12 to 16 vertical wedges, but do not cut through bottom root end. Remove about 1″ of petals from center of onion.
  4. Dip onion in seasoned flour and remove excess by shaking.
  5. Separate petals and dip in batter to coat thoroughly.
  6. Gently place in fryer basket and deep?fry at 375 to 400 1 1/2 minutes. Turn over, and fry an additional 1 1/2 minutes.
  7. Drain on paper towels.
  8. Place onion upright in shallow bowl and remove center core with circular cutter or apple corer.

Creamy Chili Sauce

  • 1 pint Mayonnaise
  • 1 pint sour cream
  • 1/2 cup Chili sauce
  • 1/2 tsp Cayenne pepper
Mix all of the ingredients together until smooth and creamy.

  3. I used 18 oz beer, and I added horseradish to my sauce to make it spicy. But Wow these were really good! The batter was better than texas roadhouse's batter! My whole family loved it!

  4. I tried this recipe last night and it tasted very bland. It may have been the beer that over powered everything else, ill have to try it again with less beer and more spice.

    1. Probably but "Outback's" recipe is locked up and there are only a select few that know it... so, they improvised.
      We all know it is not the same recipe.

  6. what is chili sauce? Does that mean chili powder?

    1. Chili Sauce and chili powder are two different things. The chili sauce can be found at the supermarket in the aisle that has the mustard, ketchup, pickles, relish, tartar sauce, etc.

  7. Add 2 Tablespoons of Johnny's seasoning powder to your batter and season it imidately after it's out of the fryer shaking off some of the access powder.

    1. the alcohol bakes out so its non-alcoholic. You can always use non-alcoholic beer available pretty much everywhere but it won't tastes quite the same without the beer of some kind
