The Light Between Oceans Movie Review

Based on the best-selling novel, The Light Between Oceans is an epic movie about love, moral dilemmas and what one will do for their loved one. Set in Australia after the Great War, Tom Sherbourne (Michael Fassbender), is a veteran who is looking for solitude as he had seen so many of those around him die and he now lives with the guilt of having survived. He takes up a job as a lighthouse keeper on Janus Rock, a job that no one wants, and will give Tom the isolation he believes that he needs.

Fate, however, has other plans for Tom. On his way to Janus he meets Isabel Graysmark (Alicia Vikander), a beautiful woman who has lost her two brothers in the war. Their love blossoms and over time the two are married. Tom brings Isabel back to Janus Rock. Unable to start a family, hope arrives in a rowboat with an infant girl being held by a dead man. Isabel feels that this was meant to be and wants to take the child as their own. Tom feels that the right thing to do is to report the child and the dead man.

In the end, Tom gives in to Isabel and they raise the child as their own, who they name Lucy. Years later when they visit the mainland, Tom discovers, by mere coincidence, who the child may be. This is when things really begin to unfold and a love triangle between parents begins. Tom and Isabel on one side and Hannah (Rachel Weisz), who is Lucy's biological mother, on the other. A series of twists and turns follows.

Fassbender gives us another powerful performance as a man who has given up on the world and fate won't let him. Vikander proves why she continues to be one of my favorite actresses in a role that you still fell sympathetic for Isabel even when she has completely flown off the rails. Weisz provides another equally powerful performance as she is perhaps the most complex and sympathetic character in the movie.

What will happen? Watch The Light Between Oceans when it opens in theaters on September 2nd to find out.

Movie Review: The Hundred-Foot Journey - A Heart Warming Tale of Food, Family and Love

The Hundred-Foot Journey is a wonderful feel-good drama/comedy about clashing cultures as well as cuisines. Directed by Lasse Hallstrom, who also directed "Chocolat," a similar themed film about great food and romance overcoming prejudice.
Our story begins in India where Papa Kadam's (Om Puri) restaurant in Mumbai is burned down during a political uprising. He moves his family to England and then to France. He decides that in France, he will start a new restaurant. The problem lies a hundred feet away from his new restaurant in the Michelin rated Le Saule Pleurer. The owner Madame Mallory (Helen Mirren) is not happy with competition.
Soon a war begins between the two owners. Each one trying to get an advantage over the other in the local market. They file complaint after complaint about each others business. Sadly, this war takes a turn for the worse as racism rears its ugly head with an act of violence.
But food is also at the forefront of the film. As a blogger that started off as a food blogger and still does restaurant reviews, they captured food the same way that anyone that is a foodie should. Showcase the food in the best possible light. Show how amazing the food is through a photo or through film to make it as visually appealing for others. We don't just eat with our mouths but with all of our senses including our eyes. Visually appealing food prepares the rest of your body for the treat that it has in store.
Papa's son Hassan (Manish Dayal) is shown that he has a special gift when it comes to cooking. He masterfully combines classical French cuisine with flavorful Indian dishes. His skills even convince Madame Mallory to take him in and continue his training.
Hassan has also fallen in love with the beautiful Marguerite (Charlotte Le Bon) who helps Hassan refine his French cooking skills and then begins to regret it.
In the middle of this story is also the relationship between Papa and Madame. Helen is exceptional showing off her strong-willed side with a sensitive soul. Om is the perfect opponent who is as stubborn as Madame and yet shows a gentle nature.
Hassan's skills continue to flourish and helps Madame gain another star to her restaurant but then the offers come in and Hassan takes his skills elsewhere. He becomes top of his craft, the king of his world.
This all reaches the climax where Hassan who should be happy that he has reached the top of his profession realizes that what he is missing most is home, family and friends. That is where he was the most passionate about his gift of cooking. Not in Paris as a famous chef, but at home with the simple things in life.
The Hundred-Foot Journey is a fantastic film to remind us that the simple things in life are all that we truly need to make us the happiest. That home is truly what the heart wants and needs. Here is to good family, friends, food and to love!

War Horse official trailer

Here is the new trailer for War Horse, the new film from Steven Spielberg:

Review of Real Steel by Matt Chavez

Hey Sasaki Time Fans! I am pleased to introduce a new member to the Sasaki Time Family, Matt Chavez, who will be writing movie reviews for the site! Please welcome him and let him know that you want to read more of his reviews!

Real Steel is a film set in the not too distant future, in where human boxing is dead and replaced in favor of giving audiences the sort of deathly carnage only robotic gladiators can provide. Charlie (Hugh Jackman) is former boxer that could take a punch from any guy that could deliver. Now, down on his luck, Charlie is a struggling promoter trying to fight his way back to the top. But this time, he is doing it with 9-foot tall boxing robots. Along his journey, Charlie receives information in regards to his long-abandoned son Max (Dakota Goyo). Max is dropped off by Charlie’s former sister-in-law (Hope Davis) and her husband (James Rebhorn) as part of a custody deal and will be spending the summer with his father. Charlie and Max initially have no use or affection for each other, but eventually bond over their interest in robot boxing. After his last robot becomes trashed, Charlie takes Max to the junkyard to scour parts to build a new one. Eventually, Max comes across a fully built robot buried in the mud. Can they take this old generation sparring bot and turn him into a champion?

Real Steel has been mocked as being the movie version of Rock ‘Em Sock ’Em Robots, but I can assure you that this movie is much more than that. Real Steel is an emotional and heartfelt story about a father and son bonding and reuniting over a common interest. Now combine that with some sweet robot-on-robot violence and a former boxer finally getting a shot at the comeback that he never quite got and you have a fun loving, feel good movie that has you cheering for the underdog. Hugh Jackman and Dakota Goyo have great chemistry together. Personally, I believe that Dakota Goyo carries a large portion of the movie and I like how he comes across as a likable, regular kid. His role is the most memorable and I think this movie will secure his place as the next “up and coming actor”. Evangeline Lilly also does a great job in her role as Bailey, Charlie’s old love and the daughter of his former coach. The robots in this movie are truly amazing and there are times when you completely forget that these iron giants are CGI. Accompanied by a good soundtrack, this high energy movie had me bobbing and weaving in my seat the entire time!!!

If you are looking for a film that will have you smiling when you leave the theater and make you feel like you got your money’s worth, the check out Real Steel!!! Real Steel hits theaters and IMAX nationwide October 7th!!!

You can catch Real Steel at The El Capitan in Hollywood from October 7th- October 19th. And if you want to feel like you are part of the action, check out Real Steel at the Anaheim Gardenwalk’s UltraStar Cinemas D-Box Motion Seats.
