Disney's Descendants creates more Disney Channel Musical Magic

Disney is hoping to take the same pixie dust that made High School Musical an international phenomenon to it's newest idea, Descendants, that debuts this Friday on the Disney Channel.

The story follows the teenage offspring of some of Disney's most famous villains Maleficent, Cruella de Vil, Jafar and the Evil Queen from Snow White. Add some of the offspring of the some of the most beloved Disney heroes in an elite prep school, some catchy songs and dance numbers and you have all the ingredients for for another Disney Channel smash hit! Even High School Musical director Kenny Ortega is back for this movie!

We begin this tale on the Isle of The Lost, a place where the Disney villains have been exiled but are free to raise their families. We meet the kids of these famous villains in a great energetic song called, "Rotten to the Core." Four of these kids are chosen to an elite prep school with, for the lack of a better term, the good kids.

Maleficent instructs the kids to steal the wand from the Fairy Godmother so she can get back into the rest of the world. But the kids begin to learn that their DNA doe not determine their destiny.

The cast is talented but the breakout star here is Sophia Carson who plays Evie, the Evil Queen's daughter. Her debut album is currently being recorded and I am sure her music will be cross-promoted throughout the Disney media empire. Maleficent is played her by one of my favorites, Kristin Chenoweth, who steals every scene she is in.

The songs are fun and range from Broadway to an awesome hip hop version of Be Our Guest. The story is fairly tightly woven within the stories of the classic Disney animated films these characters come from. A fun movie for the entire family and I can't wait to see what Disney does next as they get more and more mileage from it's classics!

Disney Descendants airs on the Disney Channel this Friday July 31st (8pm ET/PT).
