Dolby Presents: Escape, an animated short
A cinematic poem about the world-changing power of invention, the short film Escape is the latest example of animated storytelling that showcases state-of-the-art Dolby technologies. Combining techniques such as miniatures and animation with the spectacular imaging of Dolby Vision and the moving audio of Dolby Atmos, Escape invites the audience to imagine and experience a joyous vision of the future. It is a story of persistence and passion that is intended to inspire individuals to never give up on their hopes and dreams.
After crash-landing on a desolate planet, a lone space explorer must find a way to make her new home habitable. The teenage heroine is an older version of the central character in our Emmy award–winning film, Silent, known there as “the Kid.” This intrepid character displays courage, passion, determination, and curiosity as she transforms the barren landscape she has found into a beautiful planet.
Singer Imogen Heap developed an original soundtrack that wraps the audience in Dolby Atmos sound, unveiling the lead character’s changing emotions as she faces the challenges of a dark, disturbed landscape and persists to transform it into a place of joy and delight.

The BFG is Pure Disney and Spielberg Magic
Over the years, Steven Spielberg has brought us some of the most memorable family films of all-time, including E.T., Hook, An American Tail and The Land Before Time. With all of these exceptional family films and many more under his belt it is hard to believe that The BFG marks his first movie with Disney. And what a movie it is! Based on the beloved book by Roald Dahl, The BFG is one of the most heartwarming and visually stunning films of the year.
Roald Dahl has been responsible for some of the most imaginative books for children from The BFG to Charlie and The Chocolate Factory and more. His detailed descriptions help children to visualize the amazing worlds that he creates.
The movies opens in London where we meet Sophie (Ruby Barnhill), a little girl who lives in an orphanage. She suffers from insomnia and spends her time sneaking around the orphanage. One night a giant takes her into the Land of Giants. We soon discover this is The Big Friendly Giant (Mark Rylance) and together with Sophie, the pair end up on an epic adventure. Sophie helps The BFG come up with a plan to get rid of an evil band of giants.
The relationship between Sophie and The BFG is very much a grandfather to granddaughter. The chemistry between the Barnhill and Rylance feels genuine. The bond will melt your heart as the film pulls on all the heartstrings from tears to laughter.
The reason why I love movies is to transport me to worlds that I could never imagine or time periods that I could never experience. The BFG succeeds in taking me to a world where magic exists and fairy-tale endings do come true.
If you can, see it in glorious Dolby Vision and hear it in Dolby Atmos. The colors in Dolby Vision explode off the screen and the 3D is stunning! Then add Dolby Atmos to create an audio environment that not only surrounds you but encompasses you as well!
The BFG opens in theaters July 1st.

Disney's The Jungle Book World Premiere Photos
Monday April 4th was the World Premiere for The Jungle Book! Dolby was kind enough to invite me and my lovely friend Kristen to the event! So, besides the official photos from the premiere, I also threw in a few photos of us in there as well!
This was the amazing sight that welcomed us to the red carpet!
Some large high definition screens showed off footage of the jungle.
Kristen and I stopped to take our first selfie of the evening!

Dolby Cinema at AMC Prime Makes The Movies An Experience Once Again
Dolby invited me to check out their new premium large format theater at the AMC Burbank 16 to watch Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Called Dolby Cinema at AMC Prime, the goal is to bring back the pure movie going experience through amazing video and audio.
To create this return to a pure movie going experience, there are three key components:
1. Dolby Vision - powerful dual-4K laser projection creating the most realistic images ever
2. Dolby Atmos - a reference quality sound system that moves audio around the theater in sync with the action to create a more immersive experience. At the Burbank location this means 5 in-screen speakers with 48 surround speakers, 4 ceiling mounted subwoofers and in-seat tranducers for extra rumble.
3. Design - you are greeted by a signature entrance and audio/video pathway showcasing the movie you are about to watch. Premium seating, a room painted matte black to reduce ambient lighting and a large curved wall-to-wall-to-ceiling screen to make the movie going experience immersive and memorable.
Now for the experience itself:
This is my third time watching Star Wars: The Force Awakens and this has been by far the best movie watching experience of the three. I saw it at my favorite theater in the Southern California area, the historic El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood that has added Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos but the Dolby Cinema at AMC Prime had audio and video quality and clarity far above what The El Capitan could provide.
The clarity of both the score and the dialogue that far exceeded any theater thus far. This alone brought about an emotional pull into the movie like nothing that I have experienced before. The score sounded as if the orchestra was in the pit in front of the screen. But then when you can also feel the rumble of The Force and feel the blast of the explosions around you, you feel truly immersed in the experience. You are no longer just simply watching a movie but a part of the experience. Then you bring in the video quality in a theater that has no lighting distractions and you have the best way to experience Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The theater is stadium seating and the rows have more than enough clearance that you see and take in the entire screen. This is what full movie immersion is all about.
Additional Facts to know:
The cost to see a movie is on par with an IMAX screening. In my opinion, totally worth the cost and the drive. I am hoping they build one or two of these in the Orange County area. At the time of this article there are 11 Dolby Cinema at AMC Prime locations (California, Texas, Georgia, Kansas, New York, Missouri and Illinois) with more under construction.
AMC is hoping to have 50 of these locations by the end of this year and 50 more by the end of 2024.
The screenings are 2D exclusive to ensure that you are seeing the movie at it's peak output.
In Conclusion:
I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at the Dolby Cinema at AMC Prime. Being fully immersed in a movie with amazing audio and video clarity is more than worth the premium surcharge. As far as I am concerned this is the best cinema experience in the Southern California area. I look forward to seeing many more films here and hope they build one or two of these theaters closer to me in the Orange County area.
