Cars 3 Movie Review - A Sequel Worthy of The Original

Cars 3 brings us back to the core values of the first film. We get an amazing comeback movie reminiscent of the original Cars movie in a young vs. old and change vs. heritage story. The humor, heart, action and a nostalgia of the first movie is back in this third movie in the franchise.

We open with Lightning McQueen on top of the world but suddenly his world changes with the arrival of hotshot rookie Jackson Storm (voiced by Armie Hammer).

Jackson Storm takes the racing world by storm and brings a wave of next generation racers into the racing world and many of Lightning's friends are forced into retirement.

Lightning continues to race and pushes himself too far that leads to this dramatic crash that we saw in the first teaser trailer and poster. Now Lightning questions if he should race again. After months of time to think he decides to make a comeback with the help of an ambitious new sponsor, Sterling (voiced by Nathan Fillion) and an over-eager trainer, Cruz Ramirez (voiced by Cristela Alonzo).

Lightning begins his training with Cruz and we get into the deeper story of someone who is aging and slowly comes to terms with not being the best at what they do anymore.

The relationship between Lightning and Cruz is a great one and you watch it grow and develop throughout the movie. You learn that Cruz is not only a more than capable trainer but she once had a dream of being a racer herself but ruined her only chance.

The visuals are stunning and Pixar continues to push the boundaries of creating near photo-realistic worlds. The racing scenes never looked better and the training sequences along the beach are stunning!

It is to be noted that Cars 3 makes little to no mention of Cars 2 and seems more like a direct sequel to the first Cars movie rather than the third of the franchise. On the other side of that, Doc Hudson is of huge importance here. Paul Newman passed away after the first film and they used his dialogue from the original to great effect throughout the film. We get a much greater sense of Doc's story and how it pertains to Lightning's thought process of his future.

This is definitely the best of the Cars franchise. It ends in a way that you can see a fourth film down the road. It is a wonderful film about moving on with one's life or career while surrounding itself in an underdog sports story.

Cars 3, The Incredibles 2 and Toy Story 4 Release Dates!

Disney announced that they moved back the release of Toy Story 4 by a year to June 15, 2018. Opening in its place will be the third installment of the Cars franchise on June 16, 2017. Also announced was that Coco will open on November 22, 2017. Finally, The Incredibles 2 will open on June 21, 2019.

He is an animator, a director, a screenwriter, a producer, the chief creative officer for Pixar, Walt Disney Animation Studios and the DisneyToon Studios as well as being the Principle Creative Advisor for Walt Disney Imagineering. But he is also known for having an amazing collection of Hawaiian Shirts.

At the D23 Expo 2015, there was a wonderful display of the Hawaiian Shirts owned by John himself that reflect all of the animated films under John's supervision while at Pixar and at the Walt Disney Animation Studios. BURBANK, Calif. – June 25, 2015 – Buzz Lightyear will welcome visitors to D23 EXPO 2015 as Pixar Animation Studios celebrates the 20-year anniversary of Toy Story, among a host of exciting presentations, demonstrations and panels that pay homage to Pixar’s past while looking ahead to its roster of exciting new films. Plans for a Fourth Toy Story Have Been Revealed!

TO INFINITY AND BEYOND!

Nearly two decades after Pixar Animation Studios created the world’s first computer-animated feature film with “Toy Story,” it revealed plans for Disney•Pixar’s “Toy Story 4,” an adventure that returns audiences to the world of the studio’s signature characters.

John Lasseter, director of the original “Toy Story” and “Toy Story 2,” will direct the film, which opens a new chapter in the lives of Woody, Buzz Lightyear and the “Toy Story” gang. The story was dreamt up by Lasseter, Andrew Stanton, Pete Docter and Lee Unkrich, the storytellers who have been the driving force behind all three “Toy Story” films.

“We love these characters so much; they are like family to us,” said Lasseter. “We don’t want to do anything with them unless it lives up to or surpasses what’s gone before. ‘Toy Story 3’ ended Woody and Buzz’s story with Andy so perfectly that for a long time, we never even talked about doing another ‘Toy Story’ movie. But when Andrew, Pete, Lee and I came up with this new idea, I just could not stop thinking about it. It was so exciting to me, I knew we had to make this movie—and I wanted to direct it myself.”

Writing team Rashida Jones and Will McCormack (“Celeste and Jesse Forever”) joined the project, and Pixar veteran Galyn Susman (ABC’s “Toy Story OF TERROR!” and “Toy Story that Time Forgot”) is producing.

The film is slated for release on June 16, 2017.

            John Lasseter is a two-time Academy Award®-winning director and creatively oversees all films and associated projects from Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios (celebrating its 25^th Anniversary in 2011).  Lasseter made his feature directorial debut in 1995 with “Toy Story,” the first-ever feature-length computer-animated film and, since then, has gone on to direct “A Bug’s Life,” “Toy Story 2” and “Cars.” He returned to the driver’s seat this year, directing “Cars 2.”

            Under Lasseter’s supervision, Pixar’s animated feature and short films have earned a multitude of critical accolades and film-industry honors. Lasseter himself received a Special Achievement Oscar® in 1995 for his inspired leadership of the “Toy Story” team. He and the rest of the screenwriting team of “Toy Story” also earned an Academy Award® nomination for Best Original Screenplay, the first time an animated feature had ever been recognized in that category.

            In 2009, Lasseter was honored at the 66th Venice International Film Festival with the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement. The following year, he became the first producer of animated films to receive the Producers Guild of America’s David O. Selznick Achievement Award in Motion Pictures. Lasseter’s other recognitions include the 2004 Outstanding Contribution to Cinematic Imagery award from the Art Directors Guild, an honorary degree from the American Film Institute, and the 2008 Winsor McCay Award from ASIFA-Hollywood for career achievement and contribution to the art of animation.

            Prior to the formation of Pixar in 1986, Lasseter was a member of the Computer Division of Lucasfilm Ltd., where he designed and animated “The Adventures of Andre and Wally B,” the first-ever piece of character-based three-dimensional computer animation, and the computer-generated Stained Glass Knight character in the 1985 Steven Spielberg-produced film “Young Sherlock Holmes.”

            Lasseter was part of the inaugural class of the Character Animation program at California Institute of the Arts and received his B.F.A. in film in 1979. Lasseter is the only two-time winner of the Student Academy Award for Animation, for his CalArts student films “Lady and the Lamp” (1979) and “Nitemare” (1980). His very first award came at the age of 5, when he won $15 from the Model Grocery Market in Whittier, Calif., for a crayon drawing of the Headless Horseman.
