"TOY STORY 4" Trailer and Poster Shows Friends Both Old and New

The toys hit the road in “Toy Story 4” alongside friends—new and old—foes and, of course, Forky. Filmmakers welcomed Christina Hendricks, Keanu Reeves and Ally Maki to the toy box today, revealing the three new characters they help bring to life.

Among the new faces is GABBY GABBY, an adorable, talking pull-string doll from the 1950s. But unfortunately for her, a manufacturing defect in her pull-string voice box has left her sounding anything but adorable. She has spent more than 60 years forgotten in the depths of a jam-packed antique store—her only companions are a band of voiceless ventriloquist dummies. Gabby Gabby knows someone will want her if only she can find a working voice box to repair hers.

Gabby Gabby is voiced by Christina Hendricks. “It became obvious right away that Christina was the perfect actress to play Gabby Gabby,” says director Josh Cooley. “She has the ability to sound inviting and friendly, then subtly become cold and terrifying in just a few words. It still gives me chills when I see Gabby’s introduction in the film. Also, Christina told me that she preferred playing with ventriloquist dummies over dolls as a kid. That’s when I knew it was meant to be.”

DUKE CABOOM is a 1970s toy based on Canada’s greatest stuntman. Riding his powerful Caboom stunt-cycle, Duke is always prepared to show off his stunt poses with confidence and swagger. However, Woody learns quickly that Duke has an Achilles heel: He has never been able to do the awesome stunts advertised in his own toy commercial. For years, Duke has been sitting in an antique store, constantly reliving the failures of his tragic past.

Duke Caboom is voiced by another great Canadian, Keanu Reeves. “The first time Josh [Cooley] and I talked with Keanu about the role, Keanu became Duke Caboom,” says producer Jonas Rivera. “Keanu was asking great questions that dug deep to find the soul of the character. At one point he stood up on the table in the middle of Pixar’s atrium and struck poses while proclaiming victory. It was so funny. It’s all in the movie and it’s all Keanu."

GIGGLE MCDIMPLES is a miniature plastic doll from the 1980s Giggle McDimples toy line. Giggle is Bo Peep’s best friend. Small enough to perch on Bo’s shoulder, Giggle is Bo’s confidant, supporter and advisor. “Giggle is Bo’s Jiminy Cricket—we’re able to get insight on Bo through their relationship together,” says Cooley. “Giggle is definitely the smallest toy in the Toy Story universe. She’s been stepped on, vacuumed up, and probably put up a kid’s nose in her time.”

Ally Maki voices the tiny character. “Giggle McDimples literally pops on the screen because of Ally’s personality and infectious energy,” says Cooley. “Nobody can laugh like Ally Maki."

BENSON is a classic, antique ventriloquist dummy, and Gabby Gabby’s right hand. He leads a small group of ventriloquist dummies that serve as Gabby's henchmen. With no person to give them a voice, these silent toys patrol the antique store with a looming quietness that is inherently unsettling.

“The dummies are, by far, some of the creepiest characters we’ve ever created,” says producer Mark Nielsen. “Our animators really leaned into the truth in materials for how our ventriloquist dummies move. Dummies’ bodies are soft with no structure, so our dummies’ arms just dangle and their legs bend backwards. Throw in their fixed expressions with their wide eyes and big hinged jaws and they’re nightmare material—in the best way possible.”

Movie Review: Experiencing Captain Marvel in ScreenX

I was invited to check out a screening of Captain Marvel in the ScreenX format. For those of you not familiar with this format, ScreenX is the world's first multi-projection theatre technology that creates a 270-degree viewing angle of the movie you are watching.

Before the movie started, there is a video that explains how the ScreenX format works. While you are focused on what is taking place on the main screen, the side walls have projections on them to create an immersive experience. Think of this as similar to a VR experience.

Once the movie starts, the immersive factor takes hold. The action sequences are stunning in ScreenX. If there is anything that breaks the feeling of immersion is that the effect does not last for the entire movie. I found myself having to re-acclimate myself each time the side walls came on.

Take a look at the below video to see how ScreenX compares to a regular screen.

ScreenX is an interesting concept and I encourage you to experience it for yourself. I hope in the future the format can be extended for the entire movie.

Non-Spoiler Review of Captain Marvel - Brie Larson Takes Flight

As we make our way towards Avengers: Endgame, we take a step backwards, to 1995 to be exact, to get caught up on that mysterious page sent by Nick Fury at the very end of Infinity War.

I will do my best to keep this spoiler free and will discuss plot points that have been revealed by the trailers or TV spots.

As Marvel's 21st film and the first female-led superhero movie and the first co-directed by a woman, Captain Marvel has a lot to live up to. And trust me, it was worth the wait. Directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck not only shake up the timeline but also how the origin story unfolds.

Here we are introduced to Captain Marvel (played by Brie Larson) who already has her powers, though she has not truly harnessed all of them. She is a Kree soldier who is part of an elite military unit called Starforce. They are in a war with the shape shifting Skrulls. She has no idea she is Carol Danvers, as there is a huge blank spot in her memory. The Kree all-knowing Supreme Intelligence (played by Annette Bening) reminds her that there is a past that she cannot remember. Brie Larson is fierce and is perfect as Captain Marvel. Her performance stands out in an already Oscar winning career.

Live-Action "Dumbo" to Feature Arcade Fire's End-Credit Version of "Baby Mine"

The scene featuring the poignant lullaby “Baby Mine” was perhaps the most memorable moment in Disney’s 1941 classic film “Dumbo.” Serenading a touching moment between mother and son, the song featured music by composer Frank Churchill and lyrics by Ned Washington. “Baby Mine” was nominated for an Oscar® for best original song.

According to Mitchell Leib, president, music & soundtracks for Walt Disney Studios, he and the filmmakers wanted to create a version of “Baby Mine” for the end of Burton’s live-action reimagining that was as artistic and interesting as the film itself. “Not an easy ambition to accomplish,” says Leib. “Arcade Fire is an artist I’d pursued over the years—but this time I had Tim Burton! I pitched the idea to Tim and his producer Derek Frey, and it turned out Arcade Fire is one of Tim’s all-time favorite artists. The rest is history.”

Leib says the end result was perfect. “A brilliant, new, interesting, artistic and very original version of ‘Baby Mine’ now resides at the end of our new live-action ‘Dumbo.’”

Arcade Fire’s Win Butler has a very personal connection with the animated film. “There is a scene with a locomotive in the original ‘Dumbo’ that uses an instrument called the Sonovox that my grandpa Alvino Rey made famous in the 1930s,” says Butler. “Every time I saw the film I thought it was him. When we were asked to do the [end credit version of ‘Baby Mine’], I immediately got all of my grandfather’s old guitars and wanted to play them in the song. My mom plays the harp on the track, my brother the theremin, my wife [Régine Chassagne] sings and plays drums, and our son even plays the triangle, as well as the rest of our ‘family’ in Arcade Fire. I will forever relate to the song thinking about the people I hold so dear that are ‘so precious to me.’ Listen for the cameo of my grandpa Alvino’s famous Sonovox at the end.”

Arcade Fire’s Régine Chassagne says the song and the movie are just as relevant today as they were nearly eight decades ago. “It’s a story we need to tell again,” she says. “A lot has changed since 1941, and we are still on that quest to allow for all people to accept and celebrate who they are on this planet.”

Sharon Rooney, who portrays Miss Atlantis in the new “Dumbo,” performs “Baby Mine” in the film. Directed by Tim Burton and featuring a score by composer Danny Elfman, “Dumbo” flies into theaters March 29, 2019. The digital version of the “Dumbo” original motion picture soundtrack will also be available from Walt Disney Records March 29, and the physical CD is set for release on April 5.
