Vehicle Review: 2016 Mazda CX-9 Signature Edition

It's Jason from Sasaki Time and it is time for another vehicle review! This time it is the 2016 Mazda CX-9 Signature Edition! I took the gorgeous and stylish Mazda CX-9 on a trip to Northern California and some food adventures! Excited? Well, here we go!

Time to load up the luggage, a duffel bag and some snacks into the Mazda CX-9 Signature and hit the open road.

This is not your average soccer mom SUV. Powering this CX-9 is a turbocharged SkyActiv 2.5-Liter engine with four-cylinders. I averaged about 28 miles per gallon on the highway. Going up and over the Grapevine on my way to Sacramento was a breeze. It didn't even feel like the engine was working hard at all. The Sport version starts at $31,520 but the Signature edition that I tested with the real Napa leather, hand-carved Japanese rosewood interior, aluminum accents, a premium Bose audio system, solid technological and safety features is worth every penny of its $45,000 price tag.

The CX-9 Signature edition is a head turner. The long, sloping hood with that distinctly Mazda grill and smooth lines along the body and roofline make this one of the best looking SUVs on the market. I love the large 20-inch alloy wheels, heated mirrors, keyless entry, rain-sensing sensors and the power liftgate.

Inside, the CX-9 Signature edition has a number of unique interior touches.  You get Napa leather, heated front power seats, real wood accents, even knee padding on the sides of the center console. The cabin is very comfortable as well as very quiet. You get two USB ports in the front and  a fantastic Bose audio system.

The interior continues with a well thought out dash layout. Gauges and controls are easy to read and to use. A central controller on the console helps you navigate the large infotainment display. You also get a Heads-up Display (HUD) with all the critical information floating right below my direct line of sight. Not only can I easily see my speed but all of my navigation information and even safety information such as blind-side monitoring. There are quite a few safety features as well including cross traffic alerts with backup sensors, variable cruise control, lane keep assistance, emergency braking and three rows of side curtain airbags.

Now driving six hours to Northern California meant a few food adventures with my parents.

The first food adventure takes us to the Jackson Casino for this amazing dish of lobster claws for only $10. A delicious ginger black bean sauce and 10 lobster claws make this one of the best seafood dishes ever.

And no trip home would be complete without some spam musubi from my mom. As some of you know, my folks are from Hawaii and spam is the local favorite.

Back down in Southern California, I went to Cross Roast Eatery in Anaheim. They are trying to become the Asian Chipotle. You pick one of several Asian proteins such as the roast pork belly and roast duck that I chose for my dish above. You then pick the base, which I selected ginger rice, but you could pick ramen, or tacos or a baguette for instance. Then you get to pick your toppings and your sauce. An amazing experience and one I will go back to for sure.

Halfsies is a new donut shop in Tustin. Here they specialize in amazing toppings for your donut. You get to customize your donut. The one on the right is dipped in maple glaze, then topped with granny smith apples and strawberries, cinnamon toast crunch, whipped cream, a nutella drizzle and finished with a sprinkling of cinnamon. The one on the left is dipped in a chocolate glaze, cocoa krispies, cookie crisp, the Grinch ice cream, a toasted marshmallow and a chocolate drizzle. Both of my creations were amazing!

So, after these food adventures, it was time to finish my week of driving the amazing Mazda CX-9 Signature edition. From the stunning good looks to the power of the turbocharged engine, the Mazda CX-9 is a winner. Add quality craftsmanship, a comfortable cabin layout and a bevy of safety options, the CX-9 deserves to be on your list of the top family SUV list this year.

The Dirty Cookie - Milk and Cookies in a Cookie Shot!

Hey food fans! I'm back with a new food review! This time it is for the opening day of a great new place for cookies and milk, this is The Dirty Cookie! Located in the Union Market at The District in Tustin you will quickly see that this is not your typical milk and cookie place! The cookies are made into a shot glass shape and lined with chocolate and then milk is poured in and behold, you have the cookie shot!

The menu is pretty simple! There are cookie shots, cookie sandwiches and milk on tap!

I ordered my cookie shots to go and they poured the milk into separate containers. You can choose from regular milk, vanilla almond milk, chocolate milk and Madagascar vanilla cream milk.

*PRO TIP: order you cookie shots to go! The amount of milk in the separate containers gives you a couple of shots of milk and trust me you will want them to finish your cookie!*

Here is my to go bag with my milk containers!

I got one of each cookie shot! I also got a different milk for each of my cookie shots! The chocolate chip cookie shot I got chocolate milk, the Madagascar vanilla cream milk for the red velvet cookie shot and vanilla almond milk for the cookies and cream cookie shot! All of them were fantastic but the red velvet cookie shot was my favorite! All the cookies were soft and the fun came in the careful sip of the milk with a bite of the cookie! Such a fun twist on an old classic!

The Dirty Cookie is located inside the Union Market at The District in Tustin.

Restaurant Review: Bronx Sandwich Co. in Tustin - Home of Massive Street Fries and Pastrami Sandwiches!

Time to check out Bronx Sandwich Co. in Tustin! I love pastrami and if these guys live up their Bronx name, this will be my new go to pastrami place!
I ordered one of their street fries selections, The Manhattan! This thing is massive! I had no idea how huge these fries would be! I love that they give you three dipping sauces to go with it! You get regular mustard, brown mustard and buffalo sauce!
Here is closer picture of The Manhattan! Thinly sliced grilled pastrami, thick cut grilled onions, with American cheese and string fries! This thing is a meal all by itself!
They also have some great side salad options! We got the seafood salad, the macaroni salad and the egg salad! All were great but the stand out here is the seafood salad! There is so much crab in every bite! I would gladly order the seafood salad each and every time!
My friend Brian ordered the East coast Pastrami! Piled high hot pastrami with Gulden's mustard on rye. You can also get it on a hero. Plus you get the pickle slice and a pepperoncini.
Looked at all that amazing pastrami!
I went with the King of Queens on a hero! Piled high hot pastrami and corned beef with Swiss cheese and Gulden's mustard!
Look how piled high my sandwich is! I could barely eat all of it! And yes the pastrami and the corned beef were amazing! Full of flavor and soft and tender! And the hero is made from the best place to get bread from, O.C. Baking Company!

A great new sandwich place and one I cannot wait to get back to! They are even opening one closer to me in Anaheim!

Restaurant Review: Sake 2 Me AYCE Sushi Tustin!

As many of you know I love sushi and I have to go to an All You Can Eat (AYCE) place to get my fill. Typically the problem with AYCE places is that they skimp on the quality or the sashimi and usually increase the amount of rice to get you full faster and help save them on cost. But here is a place that has changed my thoughts on terms or sashimi quality and rice to sashimi ratio! Welcome to Sake 2 Me!
They start off your meal with these tasty sushi crab nachos. I don't really know what they are called but it is a spicy crab mixture on top of a crispy wanton that is meant to be like a tortilla chip. They bring you one per person and a good way to start off your meal.
They have a quite a few specials that are included on the AYCE like this amazing Cajun Popcorn Lobster Roll. So much great stuff and you can't even see the California rolls that it is sitting on!
This is another one of their specials, a Rolly Polly Roll which is salmon, albacore or yellowtail stuffed with crab! This is the salmon you see here and you can see how thick the slices of sashimi are!
There are also a number of appetizers you can order like these delicious calamari tempura! The calamari is prepared perfectly and doesn't taste like rubber like you get from other places. I also like the onion ring size portions.
They also have baked mussels. The sauce has a bit of a kick to it and are one of my favorites!
I was surprised that they even have chicken katsu on their AYCA menu! This is one of my favorites and have to order it every time I come!
Here is one of our first sushi orders! Look at the colors! So many great flavors and the freshness is clearly there! Some places I have been to have fish that has been frozen and thawed and you can taste that something is not quite right.
This is the peppered tuna and as you can see here the rice to sashimi ration is crazy! Imagine the rice being the size of half of your thumb and the sashimi being cut thick and the length of your middle finger.
Eel is one of my favorites and the ration from rice to eel is once again crazy as well. I have never seen larger slices of eel!
More salmon sushi and once again you can clearly see the rice to sashimi ratio here!
The last thing I usually order are hand rolls and of course I ordered a salmon handroll! Massive thick slices of salmon fill up this handroll!

This place can get really busy but the staff works hard to get your orders out to you!

Review of Kai Sushi (Tustin)

My friend Anthony and I went to go check out Kai Sushi in Tustin!
It's a really small sushi restaurant with a few tables. The bar itself was full with regulars so we took a table.
They make quite a few unique rolls and items. They have their daily specials on a chalkboard near the bar that is easy enough for the rest of the place to see. We ordered theie lobster appetizer! So good and thankfully so much lobster! A lot of other places sprinkle a little bit of lobster on but as you can see this was pretty much all lobster!
Beautiful color on the sashimi!
The sushi burrito!
The seared salmon and seared tuna are highly recommended!
A house specialty - the Tustin Roll!
The flaming dragon roll! Yes, it really is on fire!
The finished flaming dragon roll!

A fun place, great atmosphere and great sushi at reasonable prices!

Review of Gyu-Kaku's All-You-Can-Eat, All-You-Can-Drink Lunch

An All-You-Can-Eat and All-you-Can-Drink place? Sign me up! Oh and it's only $20 a person as well!
I love the decor and design of the place!

The sauces you can use to dip the grilled meat in! Believe it or not, I didn't use any of these sauces because the meat had so much flavor on it's own!
Fried calamari! One of my favorites!
Just part of the lunch time options! Japanese BBQ is just like Korean BBQ! You cook your own! Don't worry if you're scared about cooking your own food, the wait staff provides instructions on how long to cook each item!
The rest of the lunch time options! So all of the grilling options for the all-you-can-eat and all-you-can-drink lunch special include: bistro harami, gyu-tan, kalbi chuck, garlic shrimp, yakishabu, toro beef, chicken tenders and spicy pork. I'm not ashamed to tell you that my friend and I had two of each!
The amazing garlic noodles! We had two bowls of this!
Inside one of the foil items was sweet potatoes and the other had garlic spinach! Amazing!
Champagne was a drinking option!
Cold sake was another drinking option, as was hot sake! The best part is that you can have all three if you so choose!
And there were several ice cream choices as well! There was kona coffee, vanilla, green tea, black sesame and blueberry cheesecake. My friend wanted the lychee sorbet that wasn't offered and he asked our waitress and she brought him out some!
An absolutely incredible experience! We definitely ate and drank more than our fill! So much in fact, that we didn't eat for the rest of the day! This place quickly fills up, so arrive early! They open at 1130am and Happy hour starts at that same time! Also, there are rule and restrictions to keep in mind. They are as follows:

RULES & RESTRICTIONS:
All You Can Eat Rules: Whole party must order the same course. Only 2 item refills will be
served per person at a time. All orders served must be grilled before the next order may be
placed. There is a 90 minute limit on ordering which starts when your first order is placed.
All parties will be given a last call for order 15 minutes prior to their 90 minute ordering time
frame. All uneaten refills will be charged to your bill at regular a la carte menu prices. This
will be judged at Manager’s discretion. We will not provide to-go boxes for any leftover food.
Substitutions for BBQ items not included in the course will not be provided.

Don't worry if you can't remember all of these because the incredible wait staff will go over all of the rules with you!

I cannot wait to go back! Who is with me?

Gyu-Kaku has locations all over the World! But for this review we were at the Tustin location! Great service and great food!
