Craft Time: Cheshire Cat Easter Egg

Cheshire Cat Easter Egg Template PDF
Time: 1 Hour

What You’ll Need

  • Hard-boiled eggs dyed purplish-red (using Easter egg dye or gel food coloring) or a plastic egg of a similar size and color
  • Scissors
  • Craft paper (lavender or purplish-pink paper for the grin and ears, purple striped paper for the body and tail) *
  • Toilet tissue tubes or paper towel tube
  • Glue stick
  • Glue dots
  • Fine-tipped black marker

How To Make It

  1. Create a stand for the egg by wrapping purple striped paper around a section of a toilet tissue or paper towel tube and securing the overlapped edges with glue. Cut a bushy tail shape out of the same paper and glue it to the base of the holder (if you like, you can even accentuate the tip of the tail with lavender paper). Place the egg sideways atop the holder.
  2. Print the template and cut out all the pieces. Use the specified pieces to cut out a lavender or purplish-pink grin and pair of ears.
  3. Glue the teeth and nose cutouts onto the grin, as shown.
  4. Then draw on whiskers.
  5. Use glue dots to stick the upper edge of the assembled grin to the egg, but leave the lower edge unattached so that it remains flat and looks broad (like the Cheshire Cat’s). Glue the eyes in place just above the nose, and use the marker to draw on eyebrows.
  6. Lastly, outline each ear with a black marker and then fold the lower edge back as shown. Glue the folded portion of each ear to the top of the egg.

Notes

Cutting should be done by an adult.

Alice In Wonderland Inspired Recipe: Slow Cooker Corned Beef and Cabbage Recipe

Walrus - Alice in Wonderland

"The time has come, my little friends, to talk of other things / Of shoes and ships and sealing wax, of cabbages and kings / And why the sea is boiling hot, and whether pigs have wings / Calloo, Callay, come run away / With the cabbages and kings."

What you'll need

  • 1 (4 - 5 pound) corned beef, rinsed
  • 1 medium head of cabbage, cut into 2-inch wedges
  • 6 red potatoes, halved
  • 4 carrots, cut into ½-inch chunks
  • 1 medium onion, cut into ½-inch chunks
  • 2 cups low sodium chicken stock or water
  • 8 ounces beer (any unflavored kind will do; you can substitute water here, as well)
  • 3 large bay leaves
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper corns
Notes: Serves 4

How to make it

  1. Place onions, carrots, and potatoes in the bottom of a large slow cooker pot.
  2. Rinse the corned beef and lay it over the vegetables. Add in bay leaves, pepper corns, and Dijon mustard.
  3. Pour beer and stock over everything. Make sure liquid covers most of the corned beef; if not, add more water or stock. Cover and cook on low setting for 8 hours.
  4. Add the cabbage to the slow cooker and cook until cabbage is just tender (about 30 minutes).
  5. Plate beef and veggies.
  6. Slice beef against the grain and serve with extra mustard.

Disney’s ‘Alice’ Musical Is Said to Hire Rob Ashford

The Broadway director and choreographer Rob Ashford (“How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying”) has been hired for a stage musical adaptation of Tim Burton’s 2010 film version of “Alice in Wonderland,” according to Variety. A spokesman for the producer, Disney Theatrical Productions, declined to comment on Friday, and Mr. Ashford did not return a phone call seeking comment.
The musical is still considered several years away from reaching the stage, and no songwriters have been hired. Mr. Burton is widely known to be involved in creating the “Alice” musical; the Variety report said that Linda Woolverton is writing the musical’s book based on her screenplay for the film, and Richard D. Zanuck, one of the film’s producers, would be an executive producer of the musical. (The Disney spokesman declined to confirm those details.) The film version of “Alice,” which starred Johnny Depp and Mia Wasikowska, brought in more than $1 billion worldwide in spite of mixed reviews and won Academy Awards for art direction and costume design; the musical will be based on the movie’s designs.
Executives at Disney Theatrical have been considering a stage version of Mr. Burton’s film – one of the highest-grossing films of all time – for many months, one of several musical projects being developed from Disney films like “The Jungle Book,” “Father of the Bride” and “Dumbo.” Disney Theatrical has two new shows opening on Broadway this spring: The musical “Newsies,” which was critically praised during a tryout production in New Jersey last fall, and the play “Peter and the Starcatcher,” which had an acclaimed Off Broadway run last year.
Mr. Ashford won a Tony Award in 2002 for best choreography for the Broadway musical “Thoroughly Modern Millie”; more recently he was nominated for Tonys for best direction and choreography in 2011 for the Broadway revival of “How to Succeed,” which is still running. He is also the choreographer for the revival of “Evita” that is now in preview performances on Broadway.
