"BEAUTY AND THE BEAST" LIMITED MUSICAL SERIES COMING TO DISNEY+

BURBANK, Calif. (June 15, 2021)  As fans worldwide celebrate the 30th anniversary of the beloved animated 1991 classic, Disney+ announced today the greenlight of a limited musical series, "Beauty and the Beast" (working title) from Disney Branded Television and ABC Signature.  An eight-episode prequel to the 2017 live-action film, "Beauty and the Beast" will star Luke Evans ("The Alienist") and Josh Gad ("Frozen 2"), reprising their roles as Gaston and LeFou (Louie), and introduce Briana Middleton ("The Tender Bar") as Louie's stepsister, Tilly.  "Beauty and the Beast'' is developed, executive-produced and written by Gad, Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz ("Once Upon a Time"), each serving as a co-showrunner. The series’ creative team also includes Tony Award-nominated director Liesl Tommy ("Eclipsed," "Respect"), who has come on board as an executive producer and will direct the first episode. The project will feature an original soundtrack from the EGOT Award-winning composer Alan Menken, who will also serve as executive producer, and lyrics for the first episode will be by Oscar-nominee Glenn Slater (“Tangled”). Production will begin in spring 2022.

Set in the iconic kingdom of "Beauty and the Beast" years before the Beast and Belle's epic romance, the series will follow Gaston and LeFou as they set off with LeFou's step-sister, Tilly, after a surprising revelation from her past comes to light, sending the unlikely trio off on an unexpected journey filled with romance, comedy, and adventure.  While the mysteries of the past are uncovered and the dangers of the present grow, old friends and new enemies reveal that this familiar kingdom harbors many secrets.

“For anyone who’s ever wondered how a brute like Gaston and a goof like LeFou could have ever become friends and partners, or how a mystical enchantress came to cast that fateful spell on the prince-turned-beast, this series will finally provide those answers…and provoke a whole new set of questions,” said Gary Marsh, president and chief creative officer, Disney Branded Television.

There are few more precious gems in the Disney library than this iconic franchise, and this prequel is both a love letter to what’s come before and its own spectacular adventure,” commented Jonnie Davis, president, ABC Signature. “Josh, Eddy and Adam’s vision gives us a window into the origin of Luke’s Gaston and Josh’s LeFou with the twist of a new partner in crime—Tilly, played by the luminous Briana Middleton. This dream team would not be complete without the genius Alan Menken returning to write even more glorious music for the franchise he helped create. We’re so grateful to Gary, Ayo, Michael and everyone at Disney Branded Television and Disney+ for their unwavering support. We cannot wait to start shooting.”

“For three decades, this tale as old as time has inspired generations of fans around the world,” stated Michael Paull, president, Disney+ and ESPN+. “We can’t wait to welcome our guests back to the magical and musical world of “Beauty and the Beast” for an all new chapter with LeFou, Gaston, and a fantastic new cast of characters.”

Gad, whose recent credits include starring roles in "Avenue 5," "Marshall" and "Central Park," is currently in production on Peacock series "Wolf Like Me."  Evans is currently filming the lead role in “Echo 3,” the Apple drama series for Mark Boal and was recently cast as the lead role in Hulu's "Nine Perfect Strangers."  Middleton will be making her feature film debut in Amazon Studios' forthcoming George Clooney-directed adaptation of "The Tender Bar," based on the memoir by Pulitzer Prize-winning Writer J.R. Moehringer and is currently shooting “The Last Will and Testament of Charles Abernathy” for Netflix.

"Beauty and the Beast" is executive produced by Gad, Kitsis, Horowitz, Menken and Tommy and produced by Evans.  Gad, Kitsis and Horowitz are co-showrunners and writers for the limited series.  The soundtrack will be released by Walt Disney Records.

Frozen 2 Review - Epic, Ambitious and Get Ready for New Songs!

Hard to believe, but Frozen 2 is the first theatrical sequel to a Disney animated musical. With that being said, Frozen 2 is also more mature, more ambitious and more intricate than the original. A deeply satisfying sequel as there has ever been one.

We get a little more time with Anna and Elsa's parents and a little more info on what happened to their parents before they were lost at sea.

And then heading back to present day, Olaf lets us know that Elsa made peace with her powers at the end of Frozen when she discovered that the key to all of it was love. So, life in Arendelle, seems normal until one night when Elsa hears a mysterious female voice. Who is calling out to her? Elsa needs to know and this leads us into our adventure!

This call to adventure leads to an enchanted forest filled with items seemingly taken right out of Norwegian mythology. There is a worldbuilding here that not only feels authentic but is also meaningful.

The animation tops itself over and over again. The level of detail and the rich colors add to each frame being a work of art. And the story takes us to new places. The story touches on ideas of environmentality, reparations and how do we should confront the past. While some of these ideas might be vague enough to fit into a hundred similar situations, it might make the most powerful as a learning tool for families.

And the cast is back to take us through all of this unfamiliar territory. The bound of sisterhood between Anna and Else grows and grows. Kristoff gets what might be one of the movie's best songs. And there so many other stand out songs once again. "Into the Unknown" is the one they are playing over the trailers but I think the one they should have used was "Show Yourself". But any Idina Menzel song is never a bad choice to set up your movie. Olaf again owns every scene he is in and gets a lovely dramatic moment as well.

Frozen 2 may have gotten a little older since the original debuted in 2013 but it has never forgotten what made it resonate with the fans, a warm heart and a generous spirit.

“FROZEN 2” SOUNDTRACK AVAILABLE FOR PRE-ORDER, PLUS NEW POSTER & SNEAK PEEK OF NEW SONG

Walt Disney Animation Studios’ upcoming feature film “Frozen 2” features a stunning soundtrack, including original songs from Oscar®- and Grammy®-winning songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, original score by Grammy nominee Christophe Beck, and end-credit artists Panic! At The Disco, Kacey Musgraves and Weezer. The “Frozen 2” soundtrack, set for release from Walt Disney Records on Nov. 15, 2019, is now available for digital pre-order, pre-save at Spotify and pre-add at Apple Music (https://disneymusic.co/Frozen2). The “Frozen 2” vinyl cast songs soundtrack, “Frozen 2” score album and “Frozen 2” digital deluxe soundtrack are also available on Nov. 15. “Frozen 2” opens in U.S. theaters on Nov. 22.

The Academy Award®-winning team behind “Frozen” is back: “Frozen 2” is directed by Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee; Peter Del Vecho produces, and Lee penned the screenplay with story by Lee, Buck, Marc Smith, Anderson-Lopez and Lopez. “The music of the Lopezes and Christophe Beck are part of the DNA of ‘Frozen,’” said Buck. “We couldn't imagine building ‘Frozen 2’ without them. They bring such a rich, emotional understanding of the world and characters, and through their incredible music we have been able to really deepen and expand the story.”

“The songs and score of ‘Frozen 2’ reflect the growth of the characters and the deepening of their story,” added Lee, who also serves as chief creative officer at WDAS. “The music is fun but emotional, personal yet powerful, intimate but also epic. Kristen, Bobby and Christophe have definitely outdone themselves and taken the music to brave new heights.”

ORIGINAL SONGS BY KRISTEN ANDERSON-LOPEZ & ROBERT LOPEZ
Seven all-new original songs were written for “Frozen 2.” “From the beginning of our collaboration with Jennifer Lee, Chris Buck and Peter Del Vecho, everything we’ve created has come from big questions—what is the story that we all as artists, individually and collectively, need to tell?” said Anderson-Lopez. “Bobby and I approach the story through the lens of which moments of our story lead to big emotions—feelings so strong our characters can no longer talk but need to sing.”

Added Lopez, “Our tradition of songwriting comes from the world of musical theater, where songs must always forward the story in a fresh and surprising way. Every song has to take a character on a journey.”

The “Frozen 2” digital and physical track list follows. The vinyl soundtrack includes the first eight cast songs.
1.      “All is Found” – performed by Evan Rachel Wood
2.      “Some Things Never Change” – performed by Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, Josh Gad and Jonathan Groff
3.      “Into the Unknown” – performed by Idina Menzel (featuring Norwegian singer AURORA)
4.      “When I Am Older” – performed by Josh Gad
5.      “Reindeer(s) are Better than People (Cont.)” – performed by Jonathan Groff
6.      “Lost in the Woods” – performed by Jonathan Groff
7.      “Show Yourself” – performed by Idina Menzel and Evan Rachel Wood
8.      “The Next Right Thing” – performed by Kristen Bell
9.      “Into the Unknown” – performed by Panic! At The Disco (end credits)
10.  “All is Found” – performed by Kacey Musgraves (end credits)
11.  “Lost in the Woods” – performed by Weezer (end credits)

PANIC! AT THE DISCO, KACEY MUSGRAVES & WEEZER TAPPED FOR END CREDITS
According to executive music producer Tom MacDougall, who won a Grammy for the “Frozen” soundtrack, the “Frozen 2” soundtrack features a wide range of songs and an eclectic mix of artists performing the end credit versions. “While we can’t wait for the world to hear these songs, we feel like we got a sneak peek of how people will react with how quickly our end credits artists signed on,” he said. “Their excitement for this franchise and these songs is represented in their wildly creative takes on each of their versions.”

ORIGINAL SCORE COMPOSED BY CHRISTOPHE BECK
Beck, who’s behind the score for “Frozen,” returns to Arendelle for “Frozen 2.” He ensured a cohesive musical thread throughout the film, weaving elements from the original songs into the score. Beck once again utilized traditional Norwegian instruments to showcase the unique setting of the film—“magical, but rooted in real tradition”—as well as the Norwegian female choir Cantus, who were recorded in Norway. According to the composer, the new score reflects the evolution of the characters. “Similar to how Elsa and Anna have grown up since the last film, the new score has also matured and introduces more sophisticated musical concepts and thematic elements,” he said. “The story's emotional arc is more complex and intense than the first so I wanted the score's thematic concepts and instrumentation to follow suit. I enjoyed exploring extreme dynamic contrasts, harmonic complexity, intricate textures with vibrant colors, and hugely expressive melodic moments.”

“Frozen 2” is the follow-up to 2013’s “Frozen,” which is the highest grossing animated film of all time in worldwide box office. “Frozen” won an Academy Award® for best animated feature film of the year, and the film’s iconic song, “Let It Go,” with music and lyrics by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, also won an Oscar® for best achievement in music written for motion picture, original song.
