Disney’s Magical Family Adventure Soars Home this Holiday Season with Exciting Extras on Digital HD, Blu-ray™ and Disney Movies Anywhere on Nov. 29

The timeless tale of a boy and his fire-breathing friend is sure to melt hearts!

BURBANK, Calif., Oct. 14, 2016 — “Pete’s Dragon,” a reimagining of Disney’s cherished family film centered on an orphaned boy named Pete and his best friend Elliot -- who just so happens to be a dragon -- comes home on Nov. 29 on Digital HD, Blu-ray™, Disney Movies Anywhere, DVD and On-Demand. And the timing couldn’t be better: Today’s announcement ushers in tomorrow’s World Dragon Day and the heartwarming adventure arrives just in time to entertain the entire family this holiday season.

Families will be captivated by this magical movie followed by never-before-seen bonus features, including a revealing look at director David Lowery’s personal diary kept during the filming of “Pete’s Dragon,” the design process behind the lovable dragon Elliot, deleted scenes, a tour of the film’s breathtaking production location of New Zealand, audio commentary by filmmakers and actors and hilarious bloopers.

"Pete's Dragon" stars Bryce Dallas Howard ("Jurassic World") as Grace, a forest ranger in the Pacific Northwest who happens upon 10-year-old Pete, played by Oakes Fegley ("This is Where I Leave You"). Oona Laurence ("Southpaw") is Natalie, the 11-year-old daughter of Jack, a lumber-mill owner played by Wes Bentley ("The Hunger Games"). Karl Urban ("Star Trek") is Jack’s bumbling brother Gavin and Oscar®-winner Robert Redford ("Captain America: The Winter Soldier") portrays Mr. Meacham, an old wood carver who delights the local children with tales of a fierce dragon.

The film is directed by David Lowery ("Ain't Them Bodies Saints") from a screenplay by Lowery & Toby Halbrooks based on a screenplay by Malcolm Marmorstein and produced by Jim Whitaker, p.g.a. ("The Finest Hours”), with Barrie M. Osborne ("The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring") serving as executive producer.

Writer/director Lowery reveals, “I look back on childhood as an adventure, and I wanted to capture that on screen in the smallest—but also the biggest—way.” The big—the creation of an irresistible 24-foot tall, green, furry dragon that can breathe fire and turn invisible—is brilliantly tackled by the team at the Academy Award®-winning visual effects company Weta Digital (“The Hobbit” films and “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy). But it’s the small moments between characters that so beautifully convey the film’s powerful message: the importance of friendship, family and finding one’s place in the world.

Movie Review: Disney Pete's Dragon - A Wonderful Retelling of the Original

Disney reimagines their classic Pete's Dragon in a whole new way. Taking direction from Director David Lowery, he was intent on making sure that his movie was not a straight up remake of the original. He kept the themes of the original but told a completely new story.

The film takes place in the Pacific Northwest (though it was shot in New Zealand). The time period is rather ambiguous as you won't see signs of modern technology such cell phones for instance. Even the score is very folk-inspired and adds to that timeless quality. There are no nods to the original music however, as Lowery wanted the movie to stand on its own.

We begin with Pete and his family as they head out on vacation. There is a horrible accident and Pete is left all alone in the wilderness. As Pete wanders through the forest, he meets Elliot, a large furry dragon who takes pity on Pete. We then more six years ahead and see their friendship blossom. There are also some stunning visuals as Pete flies with Elliot over the wilderness. And Elliot, thanks to an amazing team from WETA Digital, looks as if he is truly real.

Next, we are introduced to Mr. Meacham (Robert Redford), a woodcarver who tells the children in the town the tale of his encounter with a dragon deep in the forest. His daughter, Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard), a forest ranger doesn't believe her father's tales.

In the forest, Grace meets Pete (Oakes Fegley), a young boy who says he has lived in the forest for years with his friend Elliot. He claims that Elliot is a huge green dragon that seems all too familiar to the dragon in Mr. Meacham's tales. Oakes plays Pete with a warmth and sensitivity and yet at the same time a toughness that tells you that he could have survived his time in the woods.

With the help of young Natalie (Oona Laurence), whose father Jack (Wes Bentley), runs the local lumber mill, Grace goes on a search to see if Elliot is real or not. Mr. Meacham joins them as well. Soon the trio discovers that Pete was indeed telling the truth.

They are just starting to get to know Elliot when suddenly Jack's brother Gavin (Karl Urban) and his men capture Elliot and bring him back into town.

Discover what happens next when you see Pete's Dragon for yourself when it opens in theaters on August 12th!

In the end, Pete's Dragon is a fresh retelling of the classic movie while still keeping the themes of the original. An absolutely delightful family movie going experience that will spark the imagination of your children and remind us as adults of solid family values.

PRODUCTION ON REMAKE OF "PETE'S DRAGON" BEGINS IN NEW ZEALAND

PRODUCTION ON “PETE’S DRAGON” BEGINS IN NEW ZEALAND, STARRING
BRYCE DALLAS HOWARD, OAKES FEGLEY AS PETE AND ROBERT REDFORD

BURBANK, Calif. (February 10, 2015) – Principal photography on “Pete’s Dragon” commenced today in New Zealand. A reimagining of the 1977 Disney classic, “Pete’s Dragon” will blend live action and CGI to tell the story of the special bond between an orphaned boy, Pete, and his best friend, Elliott, who just happens to be a dragon.

The film stars Bryce Dallas Howard (“The Help”) as Grace, a park ranger who discovers the existence of Elliott; 10-year-old Oakes Fegley (“This is Where I Leave You”) as Pete; Wes Bentley (“The Hunger Games”) as Jack, a local mill owner; New Zealand native Karl Urban (“Star Trek Into Darkness”) as Jack’s brother, Gavin; Oona Laurence as Natalie, the young girl who befriends Pete; and Oscar® winner Robert Redford (“Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” “All the President’s Men”) as Grace’s father.

“Pete’s Dragon” is directed by David Lowery (“Ain’t Them Bodies Saints”) and produced by Jim Whitaker, with Barrie Osborne serving as executive producer. The screenplay is by Lowery and Toby Halbrooks. WETA Digital, the visual effects company founded by filmmaker Peter Jackson based in New Zealand, will utilize the latest in digital effects to bring the dragon, Elliott, to life. The film is scheduled to be released in U.S. theaters in August, 2016.

“This is a story about how magic can enter one’s life and change the way they see the world. And I think David Lowery is the perfect director to bring this project to life,” says Whitaker.

The production begins shooting in and around Wellington before moving north to the Rotorua area, and will complete principal photography in the South Island communities of Tapanui and Invercargill.

Film New Zealand, the country’s national film office and sister agency Film Wellington assisted the Walt Disney Studios in assessing and confirming New Zealand for the production.

“New Zealand has long been a wonderful partner for film production. Wellington’s state-of-the-art facilities and filmmaker-friendly community, in particular, make it an ideal location to shoot and be based out of,” says Osborne.
