What you'll need

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 2/3 cup light corn syrup
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons black food coloring
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 6 8-inch sticks, washed and dried, or popsicle sticks
  • 6 red apples
  • parchment or wax paper
  • cooking oil spray
  • special item needed: candy thermometer
Helpful Tip: Black food coloring can be found at specialty grocery stores and craft stores.
Notes: makes 6 apples

How to make it

  1. Lightly spray parchment or wax paper with cooking oil spray and set aside until needed.
  2. Place the sticks securely in the apples, entering at the stems. Set aside until needed.
  3. In a sauce pot, combine sugar, water, corn syrup, black food coloring, and cinnamon--stir and insert a candy thermometer. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce heat to medium-high. Boil until the mixture reaches 300°F, about 15 minutes. Remove from heat.
