Paperman - Full Animated Short Film

Introducing a groundbreaking technique that seamlessly merges computer-generated and hand-drawn animation techniques, first-time director John Kahrs takes the art of animation in a bold new direction with the Oscar®-nominated short, "Paperman." Using a minimalist black-and-white style, the short follows the story of a lonely young man in mid-century New York City, whose destiny takes an unexpected turn after a chance meeting with a beautiful woman on his morning commute. Convinced the girl of his dreams is gone forever, he gets a second chance when he spots her in a skyscraper window across the avenue from his office. With only his heart, imagination and a stack of papers to get her attention, his efforts are no match for what the fates have in store for him. Created by a small, innovative team working at Walt Disney Animation Studios, "Paperman" pushes the animation medium in an exciting new direction.

DISNEY’S “THE MUPPETS … AGAIN!” KICKS OFF PRODUCTION IN LONDON
FILMMAKING TEAM BEHIND 2011’S CELEBRATED FILM “THE MUPPETS” REUNITES FOR ALL-NEW GLOBAL MUPPETS ADVENTURE

Ricky Gervais, Ty Burrell and Tina Fey Join Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Walter and the Entire Muppets Gang (Plus Celebrity Cameos)

BURBANK, Calif. (January 30, 2013) – The filmmaking team behind 2011’s celebrated film “The Muppets” reunites as Disney’s “The Muppets … Again!” kicked off production last week in London. The all-new global Muppets adventure welcomes Ricky Gervais, Ty Burrell and Tina Fey to the mayhem, along with Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Walter and rest of the Muppets. The film is directed by James Bobin (“Flight of the Conchords,” “Da Ali G Show”), who was just nominated for a BAFTA for “The Muppets” (Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer), and produced by the Academy Award®-nominated team of David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman (“The Fighter,” “The Proposal”). With a screenplay by Bobin and Nicholas Stoller (“The Five-Year Engagement”), who is also executive producer with John Scotti, “The Muppets … Again!” will feature music from Academy Award®-winning songwriter Bret McKenzie (“Flight of the Conchords”), who won an Oscar® for best original song for “The Muppets” (“Man or Muppet”). The new film will hit the big screen March 21, 2014.

“It’s great to be back working with the Muppets,” said Bobin, “some of them even remember my name occasionally now. As for the movie, it’s a tip of the hat to the old-school crime capers of the ’60s, but featuring a frog, a pig, a bear and a dog—no panthers, even pink ones—along with the usual Muppet-y mix of mayhem, music and laughs.”

Disney’s “The Muppets …Again!” takes the entire Muppets gang on a global tour, selling out grand theaters in some of Europe’s most exciting destinations, including Berlin, Madrid and London. But mayhem follows the Muppets overseas, as they find themselves unwittingly entangled in an international crime caper headed by Constantine—the World’s Number One Criminal and a dead ringer for Kermit—and his dastardly sidekick Dominic, aka Number Two, portrayed by Ricky Gervais, creator of “Derek” and the Golden Globe®- and Emmy®-winning series “The Office” and “Extras.” The film stars Golden Globe-, Emmy- and SAG Award®-winning actress and writer Tina Fey (“30 Rock,” “Mean Girls,” “Date Night”) as Nadya, a feisty prison guard, and Emmy Award winner Ty Burrell (TV’s “Modern Family”) as Interpol agent Jean Pierre Napoleon.

Said Kermit the Frog, “This movie takes us places we’ve never been before. And trust me—this frog has never seen so much international flavor. I think audiences will eat it up—the entertainment, that is.”

Featuring a slew of surprising celebrity cameos, Disney’s “The Muppets … Again!” will shoot on location in London and in Hollywood, as well as in the famed Pinewood Studios in Iver Heath, Buckinghamshire, just outside of London.

  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tablespoon instant espresso powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup (7 ounces) sugar
  • 1/2 cup grapeseed oil
  • 1 cup Greek yogurt
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup plus 4 tablespoons chopped walnuts

Procedures

  1. Grease an 8- by 4-inch loaf pan with oil and lightly dust with flour, knocking out any excess. Adjust oven rack to middle position and preheat oven to 350°F. In a small bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, espresso powder, baking powder, and salt; set aside.

  2. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs and sugar until smooth. Add grapeseed oil, yogurt, and vanilla extract and whisk until combined. Add dry ingredients to bowl and whisk until just combined. Stir in 1/2 cup walnuts.

Blu-Ray Review: Peter Pan!

Peter Pan is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year and comes home for the first time on blu-ray. It is beautifully restored with stunning high definition video and sound.

I love each and every single Disney Diamond Edition blu-ray that comes out. It feels as if my Disney Animation Collection becomes more and more complete!
The video has never looked better. As much as I love the photo-realism of today's computer animation, hand drawn animation will always have a special place in my heart. The skill of the artist is showcased without any computer assistance available. When Peter and the kids take to the air and fly around London, I am in awe of the artists that worked together to draw each frame one at a time and ability to change the scale. I think it's just as simple as that, the hands on approach that is missing from today's CGI wonders. But moving on, the colors pop as if each frame was freshly inked. Disney once again shines in video restoration!
The audio is a Dolby 7.1 surround sound mix. The music and the sound effects come alive and enhance the film. Another great job by the Disney sound designers of taking the original mono track and transforming it into what surround sound for Peter Pan would have sounded like if that technology existed back then.
Extras:
  • Introduction by Diane Disney-Miller : Walt's daughter Diane Disney-Miller provides a quick introduction to the movie.
  • Audio Commentary: Taken from the previous DVD release. The insight provided by the movie's animator's and voice actors is probably the best audio commentary of any Disney movie.
  • Growing Up with Nine Old Men (HD, 41 minutes): A look at what is was like growing up as a child of one of Walt's Nine Old Men. The children now grown up themselves provide some great insight to what their dad's were like both professionally as well as personally.

  • Deleted Songs and Scenes (HD, 15 minutes): Two deleted scenes and two deleted songs, presented via original storyboards, concept art, rough cel elements and key frames: "The Journey Home," "Alternate Arrival," "Never Smile at a Crocodile" and "The Boatswain Song."
  • Classic DVD Bonus Features - Backstage Disney (SD, 65 minutes): Five behind-the-scenes featurettes and documentaries include "You Can Fly: The Making of Peter Pan," "In Walt's Words: Why I Made Peter Pan," "Tinker Bell: A Fairy's Tale," "The Peter Pan that Almost Was" and "The Peter Pan Story."
  • Classic DVD Bonus Features - Music & More (HD/SD, 17 minutes): "Disney Song Selection" (presented in 1080p with DTS-HD MA 7.1 audio), "Deleted Song: The Pirate Song," "Never Land: The Lost Song," "Music Video: Never Land, performed by Paige O'Hara" and "Music Video: The Second Star to the Right, performed by T-Squad."
  • Disney Intermission (HD): If you pause at any point during the film, you will find "Pirate Training," a series of tips, mini-activities and video clips for younger viewers.
  • Peter Pan Sing-Along (HD): An optional Sing-Along track, that is just a simple subtitle feature.
  • DisneyView Side Bars (HD): Fill the black bars to either side of the image with artwork from Walt Disney background painter Cristy Maltese (The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin).

Once again, a fine effort by Disney as they bring another of their classic films home on blu-ray. Stunning video and audio along with some great bonus features makes this a blu-ray worthy of a trip to Neverland and back! A must have!

Crunchy Stuffed Nutella and Banana French Toast Recipe!

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups cornflakes, crushed
  • 1/2 cup Nutella
  • 8 slices white bread
  • 2 medium bananas, sliced thin
  • 2 to 4 tablespoons unsalted buttter, cut into 1/2-inch pieces
  • Confectioners' sugar for dusting
  • Maple syrup for serving on the side

Procedures

  1. In medium bowl, whisk cream, milk, eggs, yolk, sugar, vanilla, and salt to combine. Place cornflakes in pie plate or shallow bowl.

  2. Spread a scant tablespoon Nutella onto each bread slice, keeping 1/4-inch from edge. Arrange banana slices in even layer onto 4 of the bread slices, keeping bananas 1/2-inch from edge. Sandwich with remaining bread slices, pressing gently to adhere.

  3. Dip each french toast sandwich into egg mixture, soaking well. Place in cornflakes and coat both sides well. Transfer sandwiches to large plate.

  4. Heat half of the butter in 12-inch nonstick skillet over medium heat, until foaming subsides, tilting the pan to coat evenly. Place french toast sandwiches in pan and cook until bottom is golden and crisp, about 2 minutes. (Adjust heat if browning too quickly).

  5. Flip sandwiches, and add remaining butter to the pan, lifting sandwiches so that butter can get underneath. Cook until cooked through and the bottom is golden brown and crisp, about 2 minutes more.

  6. Transfer to cutting board and cut each sandwich in half diagonally. Dust with confectioners' sugar and serve with maple syrup.

PRODUCTION BEGINS ON DREAMWORKS' WIKILEAKS PROJECT "THE FIFTH ESTATE"

Drama Will Open in Theaters November 15, 2013
Participant Media Joins Project

LOS ANGELES, CA (January 23, 2013) - Principal photography has begun on the WikiLeaks drama “The Fifth Estate,” it was announced today by DreamWorks Studios.  The film about the controversial website stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Julian Assange and Daniel Brühl as Daniel Domscheit-Berg, as well as Laura Linney, Anthony Mackie, David Thewlis, Peter Capaldi, Dan Stevens, Alicia Vikander and Carice van Houten.

“The Fifth Estate” will open in U.S. theaters on November 15, 2013 and be distributed domestically by Disney’s Touchstone label.  Distribution internationally will be split among Disney, DreamWorks partner Reliance, and deals made through the studio’s partnership with Mister Smith Entertainment.

Following Daniel Domscheit-Berg (Brühl), an early supporter and eventual colleague of Julian Assange (Cumberbatch), “The Fifth Estate” traces the heady, early days of WikiLeaks, culminating in the release of a series of controversial and history changing information leaks.  The website’s overnight success brought instant fame to its principal architects and transformed the flow of information to news media and the world at large.

Joining DreamWorks as a co-financier on “The Fifth Estate” is Participant Media.  This will be the fifth collaboration between the two companies who previously partnered on Steven Spielberg’s “Lincoln,” the 2011 Academy Award-winning smash “The Help,” “The Kite Runner” and “The Soloist.”  With a focus on real issues that shape our lives, Participant creates social action and advocacy programs to transform the impact of the media experience into individual and community action.  Some of their other films include “An Inconvenient Truth,” “Good Night, and Good Luck,” “Food, Inc.,” “Charlie Wilson’s War,” “Waiting for ‘'Superman,’” “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” and the current Academy Award nominee for Best Foreign Language Film, “No.”

Bill Condon (“Kinsey,” “Dreamgirls,” "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn") will direct “The Fifth Estate” from a screenplay by Josh Singer (TV’s “Fringe,” “The West Wing”), based on “Inside WikiLeaks: My Time with Julian Assange at the World’s Most Dangerous Website” by Daniel Domscheit-Berg and “WikiLeaks: Inside Julian Assange’s War on Secrecy” by David Leigh and Luke Harding.  The producers are Steve Golin and Michael Sugar, with Participant’s Jeff Skoll and Jonathan King joining Richard Sharkey as executive producers.  “The Fifth Estate” is a coproduction between Afterworks and FBO, with Hilde De Laere co-producing for FBO. The film is supported by the Belgian Tax Shelter for Audiovisual Production.

Said director Bill Condon, “It may be decades before we understand the full impact of WikiLeaks and how it's revolutionized the spread of information. So this film won't claim any long view authority on its subject, or attempt any final judgment. We want to explore the complexities and challenges of transparency in the information age and, we hope, enliven and enrich the conversations WikiLeaks has already provoked.”

  • 3 3/4 cups (about 18 3/4 ounces) all purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup (about 2 1/3 ounces) sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) unsalted butter, diced
  •
  • For Filling
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup (3 1/2 ounces) sugar

  • 4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup Grade B maple syrup
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

  2. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook, combine flour, sugar, and salt and stir with a wooden spoon to combine. Add eggs and milk mixture and stir to combine. Add butter and start mixer on low. Gradually increase speed to medium high and knead until elastic and smooth, about 10 minutes. Lightly grease a large bowl with butter. Transfer dough to bowl, cover with a kitchen towel, and let sit in a warm place until doubled in volume, about 1 hour.

Sprinkle surface with cinnamon sugar, leaving a 1/2-inch border on all sides. Roll dough up, jelly roll style, and press to seal edges. Use a sharp knife to cut dough into 12 pieces. Place buns, cut side down, in prepared baking dish. They should be fit together as snugly as possible without crushing them. Cover with a baking dish and let rise until almost doubled in volume, about 40 minutes.

  5. While dough rises, adjust oven rack to middle position and preheat oven to 375°F. Bake buns until golden and puffed, about 35 minutes.

  6. Meanwhile, Make Sauce : In a medium saucepan, melt butter over medium low heat. Add heavy cream, maple syrup, and salt, and whisk quickly to combine. Increase heat to medium high and bring to a boil. Boil hard for one minute. Brush each warm cinnamon bun with sauce.

It's Official: J.J. Abrams to Direct Star Wars: Episode VII

J.J. Abrams to Direct Star Wars: Episode VII

J.J. Abrams will direct Star Wars: Episode VII, the first of a new series of Star Wars films to come from Lucasfilm under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy. Abrams will be directing and Academy Award-winning writer Michael Arndt will write the screenplay.

“It’s very exciting to have J.J. aboard leading the charge as we set off to make a new Star Wars movie,” said Kennedy. “J.J. is the perfect director to helm this. Beyond having such great instincts as a filmmaker, he has an intuitive understanding of this franchise. He understands the essence of the Star Wars experience, and will bring that talent to create an unforgettable motion picture.”

George Lucas went on to say “I’ve consistently been impressed with J.J. as a filmmaker and storyteller.  He’s an ideal choice to direct the new Star Wars film and the legacy couldn’t be in better hands.”

"To be a part of the next chapter of the Star Wars saga, to collaborate with Kathy Kennedy and this remarkable group of people, is an absolute honor,” J.J. Abrams said. “I may be even more grateful to George Lucas now than I was as a kid."

J.J., his longtime producing partner Bryan Burk, and Bad Robot are on board to produce along with Kathleen Kennedy under the Disney | Lucasfilm banner.

Also consulting on the project are Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg.  Kasdan has a long history with Lucasfilm, as screenwriter on The Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark and Return of the Jedi. Kinberg was writer on Sherlock Holmes and Mr. and Mrs. Smith.

Abrams and his production company Bad Robot have a proven track record of blockbuster movies that feature complex action, heartfelt drama, iconic heroes and fantastic production values with such credits as Star Trek, Super 8, Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol, and this year’s Star Trek Into Darkness. Abrams has worked with Lucasfilm’s preeminent postproduction facilities, Industrial Light & Magic and Skywalker Sound, on all of the feature films he has directed, beginning with Mission: Impossible III. He also created or co-created such acclaimed television series as Felicity, Alias, Lost and Fringe.

Craft Time: Minnie Mouse Valentine's Day Candy Box!

Download Minnie Mouse Valentine Candy Box Printable Template!

How to make it

  1. Use scissors or a craft knife to cut out Minnie's body and each of her arms. Do not cut along dashed lines in the body or arms -- these lines are where you will fold the paper.
  2. Take Minnie's body and make all of the folds along the dashed lines for the body and the tabs. Make each fold away from you except for Minnie's legs. For Minnie's legs, fold the top dashed line toward you and the bottom dashed line away from you. This will help Minnie sit on the edge of a table or shelf.
  3. Glue the tabs to the inside of Minnie's body. Follow the curve of Minnie's waist. The glued tabs will create an open box on Minnie's back.
  4. Fold each of Minnie's arms in half along the dashed line and glue the two sides together. Be careful to not get glue on the outer tabs of the arms. Fold those outward and use them as a base to attach the arms to Minnie's body.
  5. For the left arm, cut the cover of the candy box (that says "Happy Valentine's Day") out and fold the tab on it away from you. Glue the tab to the space provided on the hand, being careful to glue only the tab so that the box top flaps open. Once the pieces have dried, glue the picture of chocolates to the light pink inside of the box in Minnie's hand so the candies appear to be inside the box when you lift the top flap.
  6. Glue each arm to Minnie's sides.
  7. Drop a few pieces of candy into the box formed on Minnie's back and make a special delivery!

Disney Time: World-Renowned DJ Steve Porter Creates a Walt Disney World Resort 'Magical Mashup'

As he sits in his production company's headquarters on a chilly Massachusetts day, DJ Steve Porter's thoughts are about 1,200 miles south, at the Walt Disney World Resort. Surrounded by computers, musical instruments, monitors and all sorts of editing equipment, he's putting the finishing touches on his latest remix video, a mashup of magical proportions for Walt Disney World Resort. Take a look (and listen!) and enjoy the video. But a word of whimsical warning: like many songs featured in Disney attractions (yes, I'm thinking about you, "it's a small world"), Porter's "It's Magical" tune just might stick in your head for a little while after you view it. Sweet WALL-E Cookie Recipe!

Download Wall-E Valentine Cookie Recipe Template

What you'll need

  • Template for Sweet WALL-E Cookies
  • Batch of chilled sugar cookie dough (homemade or store bought)
  • Rolling pin
  • Flour
  • Wax paper
  • Kitchen knife
  • Baking sheet
  • Spatula
  • Wire cooling rack
  • White cookie icing
  • Butter knife
  • Chocolate Candy Melts
  • Chocolate M&M’s candies
  • Small microwavable bowl
  • Toothpick
  • Small round pretzels
If the store bought brand of dough you use is too soft to hold the cookie shapes during baking, you can knead in a little extra flour to stiffen it before rolling it out.

How to make it

  1. Heat the oven to the specified temperature for the cookie dough. Meanwhile, print and cut out the template pieces.
  2. Roll out the dough on a floured sheet of wax paper to ¼-inch thickness and then use the template and kitchen knife to cut out a bunch of WALL-E eyes (both left and right). Bake the cookies according to the recipe directions and then transfer them to the wire rack to cool completely.
  3. Step 3Working with one cookie eye at a time, frost the surface with white cookie icing, and gently press a candy melt in place for the iris. Next, use a blob of cookie icing to “glue” a chocolate M&M’s candy atop the candy melt.
  4. Melt a few chocolate Candy Melts in a microwavable bowl, heating them for 10- to 15-second intervals until they are soft enough to stir into a smooth consistency. Use the tip of a toothpick dipped in the melted chocolate to add three “rivets” to each eye.
  5. Use more of the melted chocolate to stick each completed pair of WALL-E eyes to the top of pretzel.

Recipes: Fried Coke!

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups Coca Cola, plus 1/3 cup for fritters
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup confectioner's sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 quarts canola oil for frying
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup Bisquick mix
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting surface
  • 4 maraschino cherries

Procedures

  1. In a small saucepan heat 1 1/2 cups of Coca Cola over medium high heat until it reduces to just 1/2 a cup of cola concentrate, about 15 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside to cool. While coke is reducing, whip cream and granulated sugar in a stand mixer or by hand until stiff peaks are formed. Combine confectioner's sugar and cinnamon in a large bowl and set aside.

  2. Heat oil to 360°F in a large Dutch oven and adjust flame to maintain temperature. While oil is heating prepare the fritter batter.

  3. In a large bowl whisk together remaining 1/3 cup of Coca Cola with vanilla. Stir in Bisquick to form a sticky dough. Sprinkle surface of dough with flour until a pliant and less sticky dough forms. Turn the dough out onto a generously floured surface. Flatten the dough into a large square about 1/2' thick and cut into 3/4' square pieces. Roll each square into a little ball.

  4. One at a time, place the balls in a shallow heat-resistant strainer then carefully transfer to the hot oil, cooking no more than 4 at a time. Fry for 1 to 2 minutes or until golden on the bottom. Then using heat resistant strainer or tongs, carefully turn fritters and fry until golden brown on second side, about 1 minute longer. Use strainer to remove fritters from hot oil. Transfer to a paper towel lined wire cooling rack. Repeat, cooking in batches, until all the dough balls have been fried.

  5. Toss fritters in cinnamon sugar. Divide the fritters among four low ball glasses, drizzle fritters with Coke concentrate then top with whipped cream and a cherry. Serve immediately.

"LINCOLN: AN AMERICAN JOURNEY" BEHIND-THE-SCENES SPECIAL DEBUTS ON APPLE iTUNES

“LINCOLN: AN AMERICAN JOURNEY” BEHIND-THE-SCENES SPECIAL DEBUTS ON APPLE iTUNES

FIRST INSIDE LOOK AT STEVEN SPIELBERG’S “LINCOLN” ONLINE TODAY

Burbank, CA  (January 16, 2013) – DreamWorks Pictures announced today that a behind-the-scenes special, “Lincoln: An American Journey,” an exploration of the making of their highly commended film “Lincoln,”  debuts online today, Wednesday, January 16, on Apple iTunes at 12:00 p.m. (PST).  The special will also be aired on television on Sunday, January 20, on KCBS at 9:00 a.m. (PST).

“Lincoln: An American Journey” is an inside look at the making of DreamWorks Pictures’ “Lincoln,” the film that has become a nationwide phenomenon, grossing over $150 million to date since its opening on November 9. “Lincoln,” directed by Steven Spielberg and produced by Spielberg and Kathleen Kennedy, has received more awards nomination than any other film this year, including 12 Academy Award® nominations.

The special marks the first time audiences will be able to go behind the scenes with Steven Spielberg, Daniel Day-Lewis and Sally Field to experience how everyone came together over a 12-year journey to bring “Lincoln” to the big screen.
The American Film Institute writes of the critically acclaimed film: ‘Lincoln’ belongs to the ages. Steven Spielberg’s landmark motion picture enriches the American canon—freeing the Great Emancipator from his tintype image and exploring the wit and wisdom that made the man. Daniel Day-Lewis is instantly iconic, demonstrating an immersion into character that is as honest as it is immediate. Sally Field, Tommy Lee Jones and an extraordinary acting ensemble breathe humanity into history, while Tony Kushner's brilliant screenplay illustrates the power of words to dazzle above the most special of effects. Film legends D.W. Griffith and John Ford each depicted their versions of America’s sixteenth president, and Spielberg’s now stands beside them with this telling for our time—and for all time.”

“Lincoln” is a revealing drama that focuses on the 16th President’s tumultuous final months in office. In a nation divided by war and the strong winds of change, Lincoln pursues a course of action designed to end the war, unite the country and abolish slavery. With the moral courage and fierce determination to succeed, his choices during this critical moment will change the fate of generations to come.

Starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field, David Strathairn, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, James Spader, Hal Holbrook and Tommy Lee Jones, “Lincoln” is directed by Steven Spielberg, produced by Steven Spielberg and Kathleen Kennedy, with a screenplay by Tony Kushner, based in part on the book “Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln” by Doris Kearns Goodwin.

What you'll need

  • Batch of sugar cookie dough (homemade or store-bought) *
  • Red food coloring
  • Disposable food preparation gloves (for kneading food coloring into the dough)
  • Plastic wrap
  • Rolling pin
  • Flour
  • Wax paper
  • Heart cookie cutter (about 2.5 inches wide)
  • Baking sheets
  • Cooling rack
  • Dark cocoa candy melts
  • Small microwavable mixing bowl
  • White licorice candies (such as Good & Plenty) - two for each cookie
  • Toothpick
* If the store-bought brand of dough you use is too soft to hold the cookie shapes while baking, you can knead in a little extra flour to stiffen it before rolling it out.

How to make it

  1. Knead red food coloring into the cookie dough. Then flatten the dough into a disk and wrap it tightly in plastic. Chill the dough until firm.
  2. Heat the oven. Working on a flour-dusted sheet of wax paper, roll out the chilled dough to 1/4-inch thickness. Cut heart shapes from the dough. Bake the cookies according to the recipe directions and then let them cool completely.
  3. Melt a cup or so of the candy melts in the microwave according to the package directions.
  4. Dip the top of each heart in the melted chocolate (if needed, gently scrape the back of the cookie against the rim of the bowl to remove any excess coating). Place the dipped cookies on a wax paper-lined tray.
  5. For the finishing touch, use dabs of the leftover melted candy (applied with the tip of a toothpick) to attach a pair of white licorice candy "buttons" to the lower portion of each heart.
