Discovery Science Center Collaborates with Cal State Fullerton for 5th Annual Pumpkin Launch

Discovery Science Center and Future Scientists and Engineers of America are teaming up for the 5th annual Pumpkin Launch on Saturday, November 10th. Families and friends of all ages are invited to this free event hosted at California State University, Fullerton from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., held rain or shine.

This family fun occasion offers a variety of activities for visitors to take part in. Engineer enthusiasts can witness pumpkins being launched with self-made trebuchets and other catapulting devices. For a more hands-on lesson on projectiles, children are invited to build their own miniature catapults out of popsicle sticks and launch marshmallows. Other interactive activities at the Pumpkin Launch include pop rocket building and a rubber band and whiffle ball catapult station. A medieval showcase by Adrian Empire will also present different costumes, weapons, weaving materials, and other tales of past times.

Guests who arrive on an empty stomach will be able to satisfy their cravings with unique cuisine while supporting local food trucks, including: Spudrunners, Barcelona-on-the-Go, The Lime Truck, Dogzilla, Pogi Boy, Crepes Bonaparte, plus many more!

This event is designed to give adolescents the opportunity to see what a college campus is like and to introduce them to academics in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) related industries. Families not only get to enjoy time together, but they can learn about the science of flying pumpkins and other objects in a creative and interactive way.

“The annual Pumpkin Launch provides young people the opportunity to visit a university campus, interact with student engineers and consider an academic and lifelong career in a STEM related field,” says Discovery Science Center Vice President of Education, Janet Yamaguchi. “Also, it’s great fun to see amazingly engineered devices in action, launching pumpkins toward the targets!”

Registration for the Pumpkin Launch is now open online. For more information about this event and to register visit http://www.discoverycube.org/pumpkinlaunch.
